Providing the Best Vasectomy Procedures to Haitian Men
In July of 2015, I joined the No-Scalpel Vasectomy International vasectomy team on their surgical mission to Northern Haiti. The purpose of this mission was to provide the best vasectomy procedures to the people of Haiti.
The vasectomy team consisted of five vasectomy doctors and support staff. We landed in the northern city of Cap Haitien, Haiti and intensely performed vasectomy procedures over the course of three days. We were able to offer the people of Haiti the best vasectomy procedures just like we do in the United States: no needle, no scalpel, single opening, open-ended vasectomy.
We performed vasectomy procedures on eighty-eight (88) Haitian men who had cumulatively fathered 531 children. This is an average of 6 children for each man! The birth rate is high in Haiti because of lack of access to contraception, tubal ligation, and vasectomy. Infant and maternal mortality are also extremely high because of limited health care resources and access to basic health care services.
It was a honor to be able to travel with the team because we were helping one of the poorest countries in the world. Haiti has been devastated by over-population, over-consumption of scarce resources, and natural disasters. We were eagerly received by the men of Haiti and they were very appreciative our efforts to provide them with the best vasectomy procedures currently available.
